What is Cyber Essentials Certification?
Cyber Essentials is a government-backed scheme introduced in 2014. The certification was designed for all organisations of any size and sector, and is used to demonstrate appropriate security and defences in line with the current guidance.
There are two options available, Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus. Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment questionnaire that validates you against five, basic security controls: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and patch management. Cyber Essentials Plus is the next stage of the certification process, and involves internal and external testing of your systems to determine their risk level.
Ultimately, the aim of Cyber Essentials is to help organisations protect themselves against the most common cyber threats and showcase a commitment to data security.

In order to apply for Cyber Essentials Plus certification, your organisation must complete and pass the self-assessment questionnaire as part of Cyber Essentials. The Cyber Essentials Plus assessment is based on your answers provided in the self-assessment questionnaire, and your organisation must apply for Cyber Essentials Plus within 3 months of obtaining Cyber Essentials certification.
How long is Cyber Essentials certification valid?
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certification are valid for 12 months upon successful completion.
How do I complete the Cyber Essentials self-assessment?
Once you’ve applied for the Cyber Essentials self-assessment questionnaire, you’ll receive instant access to our user hub, Atlas, allowing you to manage and complete your assessment in a secure, central location. You’ll be required to input the relevant information directly via our user hub, and you can also receive step-by-step support from a team of Security Analysts* to help you obtain the certification.
