We exhibited at Britain’s Energy Coast infosec conference which took place on the 23rd of January, at ENERGUS in Cumbria. The event was really well attended and the speakers put forward some very thought provoking points about the prominence of information security for businesses today.
Zain Javed, Head of Penetration Services at Mitigate Cyber Security did a live demonstration of how hackers obtain control of your systems, and what they can access through a few simple steps. Zain focused on the Stuxnet disaster, a virus responsible for ruining one-fifth of the Iranian nuclear centrifuge in 2010. Stuxnet affected 6 major countries and led Iran and the USA to assess their cyberwar capabilities.
Highlights of the event include opening speaker Orla MacRae of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills who laid out the Government’s advances in cyber security, including details of the schemes and initiatives put in place to assist businesses. Rakesh Burgul of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority put forward the following thoughts to the audience:
He said: “If you haven’t been hacked yet you probably will be, there’s no such thing as 100 per cent security.
“Put yourself in the mind of the adversary, you can go some way to defend yourself.
“The difference between health and safety and security is the element of intent.
“In terms of health and safety, nobody will intentionally fall off a ladder, whereas in security people do deliberately want to harm you.”
